When a woman was sexually assaulted, the body was found, the evidence suggests. But the results of an analysis of data from the Department of Veterans Affairs showed the opposite pattern: women who experienced physical trauma more often had more erections than men who didn’t experience the same degree of trauma.
Dr. Stephanie D’Souza, a sexual assault survivor, toldMorning Newsthat she was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction in 2005 after an incident in which a man was sexually assaulted. She said it was “an incredibly distressing and disturbing experience.”
“It’s a very disturbing thing. I had a traumatic experience,” she said. “We just had this idea in my head: I’ve been an survivor and this is the most traumatic experience I’ve ever had in my life.”
She said that when she was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction in the 1990s, she and her husband went to the ER and had to get a prescription for Viagra. After several attempts, Viagra was eventually given to her. She was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction in 2015. The doctors prescribed a medication called Levitra, which has since been used off-label to treat erectile dysfunction.
But it wasn’t until her husband died in 2013 that the medication was approved by the FDA. The drug has been in the prescription market since it was approved in 1998. In 2016, the FDA approved another drug, sildenafil, and the drug has been on the market for more than 30 years. It was also approved in 2017 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug is a generic version of Viagra. When doctors prescribed it for erectile dysfunction, the drug was prescribed to more than 60,000 men in more than 50 states. It was the first medication to treat sexual dysfunction.
D’Souza said the side effects are more pronounced than the physical ones and may include the loss of vision, chest pain, headaches, flushing, and stuffy nose. It’s not known if the drugs are safe to take with alcohol, and if they are not, she said.
D’Souza said that her husband died from the effects of the drug. “I knew he would die from that,” she said.
“We didn’t know it was a drug,” D’Souza said. “We knew he had been in the system. I never thought it was possible to take it.”
She said she was able to have sex with her husband after the incident. “He was so young and so beautiful. It’s so sad. He had so many emotions,” she said.
“I’m so lucky to be alive today,” said Dr. Peter O’Neill, a University of Chicago cardiologist. He was a cardiologist who has treated men who have experienced physical trauma.
“It’s just sad and heartbreaking,” O’Neill said. “I’ve done hundreds of these, and I know what it can do.”
The erectile dysfunction treatment market has been a growing one, but D’Souza said she doesn’t see a trend in seeing new drugs on the market. There has been a push to get a new treatment from a pharmacy, she said.
“I’ve seen a lot of patients that are looking at the side effects,” she said. “They’re worried.”
The drugs work by increasing blood flow to the penis. They are approved for a variety of uses. But for erectile dysfunction, they are less effective. So, they are prescribed only when the patient needs it. D’Souza said that is the reason why she has not been able to get the medication for many years.
“If I had to go to a pharmacy, I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” she said. “It’s really devastating.”
“My relationship with my husband was extremely difficult. I was always trying to tell him the truth,” she said. “He’d always say, ‘I didn’t mean to hurt you.’”
The drug works by blocking a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. That chemical is involved in the production of blood, and it can help a man get erections.
